Hundreds of residents in villages in Gharbiya have threatened to block roads to protest of power outages lasting more than five hours per day.
Residents were angry with the poor management of the Delta Electricity Company, as well as the company's insistence on cutting power to all villages in Gharbiya for more than five hours daily. The cuts coincide with significant temperature increases and the month of Ramadan.
A number of Kafr Salem village residents used speakers to call on people not to pay electricity bills.
The Delta Electricity Company had decided to cut off electricity to villages on an alternating basis. Some villages have suffered complete blackouts for more than four hours a day.
Youth from Bassion, Kafr al-Zayat, Mahalla and Tanta called for a mass demonstration in front of the electricity company’s building in Tanta, demanding the dismissal and trial of those responsible for the power outages.
Egypt has been suffering frequent power cuts over the last few weeks. Many governorates have seen protests against almost daily blackouts, while some activists have called on people to refrain from paying power bills.
