Interior Ministry: 90,000 escaped convicts arrested since August

Police arrested 90,000 escaped convicts and 10,000 who they said represented security threats since the first of August until the end of September, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police also returned 2,176 stolen cars and investigated 21,000 suspects during the same period, the statement said.

The statement also said that 3,032 pieces of weaponry were confiscated, including hand grenades, surface-to-air missiles, landmines and rocket-propelled grenades.

Other weapons were found at 20 illegal manufacturing depositories, it revealed.

The Ministry also said it apprehended members of 303 gangs, which included including 874 felons.

Security has been a concern for many Egyptians since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak. One of President Mohamed Morsy’s main promises upon taking office was to address the security vacuum and soaring crime rates.
