Internet, phone service back in N.Sinai after 3-hour outage

Internet and phone services returned to North Sinai on Wednesday after a three-hour outage, according to a governorate source.

The service was blocked by security services who were carrying out a wide-scale raid on militant hide-outs, according to the source, who said the measure was meant to prevent militants from communicating or remotely-detonating explosives using cell phones.

Army and police forces have been battling Islamic State-affiliated militants in North Sinai who have killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood government in 2013.

Many parts of North Sinai are under a partial curfew which has been in force since October 2014, when an attack on an army checkpoint killed nearly 30 soldiers.
