Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas supports a private investigation into the death of former President Yasser Arafat, he said Thursday, despite resistance from his Foreign Minister Nasser al-Qudwa.
The exhumation of Arafat’s body is not against Islamic law, Abbas stated.
A documentary that aired recently on the Qatar-based Al Jazeera news channel presented information regarding Arafat’s alleged poisoning in November 2004, including the results of tests on Arafat’s personal belongings that were conducted in Switzerland and allegedly revealed traces of highly toxic radioactive polonium.
Arafat's widow, Suha Arafat, has demanded an investigation into the death of her husband, even if it means exhuming his body.
