A police officer is dead and another injured after residents in Abu Hilal in southern Minya Governorate allegedly fired on the two officers early Monday as they were investigating the scene of a fight between families.

Officers Amr Mohamed Hassan and Al-Hassan al-Sharif were taken to a hospital, but Sharif died of his injuries, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

"Security is stepping up efforts to arrest the perpetrators," the statement read.

Fighting between security forces and residents continued Monday and police reportedly destroyed a shack owned by one of the suspects believed responsible for the officer's death.
