Police thwart armed robbery attempt in Sharm el-Sheikh

Police on Wednesday thwarted an attempted armed robbery at the Credit Agricole Bank in Naama Bay in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The attempted robbery was carried out by four masked gunmen riding in a yellow jeep.
Police in charge of guarding the bank exchanged gunfire with the masked gunmen, leading to the injury of policeman Ahmed Fawzy.
South Sinai investigations director Gamal al-Baie said the police succeeded in thwarting the attempted robbery and that intensified efforts were taking place to catch and arrest the perpetrators. He said Fawzy had been shot twice in the foot.
In January, a French man was killed in a shooting in Sharm el-Sheikh.
Police said the man was hit randomly in a drive-by shooting by Bedouin gunmen who opened fire on the Old Souk in Sharm el-Sheikh to avenge the death of a tribesman killed by police earlier in the day.
A military official, however, said the man got caught up in gunfire during a bank robbery in the town.
