Public Prosecution halts sex assault investigation

The Qasr al-Nil Public Prosecution halted an investigation Tuesday into the alleged mob sexual assault of a female decorator in Tahrir Square in January.

Unnamed judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the woman had refused a medical examination, while the forensic investigation team failed to identify the perpetrators.

The woman reported that a group of people had surrounded her and tore off her clothes during protests on the second anniversary of the popular uprising.

Several others have filed similar reports, claiming groups of attackers were targeting women for group sexual assaults in and around Tahrir Square during the weeks of clashes.

Some have suggested the attacks are systematic and designed to prevent women from participating in the public sphere.

Activists and women's groups have accused the Muslim Brotherhood of being behind the assaults.
