Qatari FM talks Egypt and the Middle East

Speaking to the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Wednesday, Qatari Foreign Minister Khaled bin Mohamed al-Attiya spoke of, among other pressing issues in the region, Qatar’s wish of well-being to Egypt and its people.

Ties between Cairo and Doha were severed upon the ousting of Qatar's ally, former president Mohamed Morsy in 2013.

Attiya, however, showed no lingering signs of the breakdown in relations when he stated, “There are no disputes between Cairo and Doha that require healing."

In talks regarding current unrest in the region, the minister indicated that since the Houthis have taken control, gulf countries can no longer individually declare the measures they will take to protect their interests in Yemen. Instead, they will collectively decide what is in their favor under the umbrella of the United Nations. Attiya went on to explain that collective action among gulf countries is required to face the turmoil taking place in the region in light of the growing number of terrorist groups.

Attiya added that gulf countries have been confronting terrorism since before the rise of the international alliance against terrorism. Joining the alliance in these times merely confirms Qatar's role in this regard.
