Recession-stricken Red Sea tourism workers get LE3 mn assistance from govt

Thousands of workers at tourism facilities in the Red Sea are receiving LE3,606 million from the government in financial assistance to help cope with stalled tourist activity in Egypt's resort cities.

The Manpower Ministry made the decision on Thursday to assist nearly 5,603 workers in 36 tourist facilities, diving centers and travel agencies that fell behind in paying wages due to the “economic circumstances” they are enduring.

The measure falls in line with a directive by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail.

Tourism in the Red Sea and neighboring Sharm el-Sheikh has been severely impacted since the downing of a Russian passenger jet in Sinai on October 31, which was claimed by Islamic State affiliates.

Several countries have suspended flights to the cities, conditioning improvements to airport security measures before resuming regular flights.
