Swarms of locusts appeared in Cairo skies, Egyptian state TV reported on its website Saturday, adding that the animals were clearly visible in the Moqattam neighborhood.
Local residents set car tires alight in an effort to disperse the swarms.
The report added that the swarm was moving toward New Cairo and the Kadhamiya area, and that swarms had also reached the Cairo-Suez highway.
State TV quoted Agriculture Minister Salah Mohamed Abdel Momen as saying that the ministry’s teams are following the swarms to fight them before they reach Cairo.
