Three rescued, four still missing after building collapses in Alexandria

A three-story building in Alexandria collapsed on Friday. Security forces have rescued three survivors, but continue to search for at least four others under the rubble.

Security sources say the collapse was not due to the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that shook the city early this morning, but was probably triggered by the unlicensed construction of a nearby building.

The collapsed building was located on the Mahmoudeya water channel in the Hagar al-Nowateya area.

Alexandria has seen several fatal collapses recently. Nineteen were killed when a building collapsed in the same district one month ago.

Failure by local authorities to execute demolition orders on time and the unauthorized construction of additional floors are the primary culprits behind these increasing, catastrophic building collapses.
