UAE arrests activist critical of security forces

DUBAI — Dubai police say authorities have arrested an online activist for damaging "national unity," marking the latest effort by Emirati authorities to keep a lid on unrest.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that Saleh al-Dhafairi was arrested on charges of "incitement through … spreading ideas that damage national unity or social peace."

Dhafairi recently posted messages critical of Emirati security forces on his Twitter account. His last tweet read: "Dear brothers, the police are arresting me now from my home."

The UAE has not seen mass protests like those that erupted in other countries during last year's Arab Spring, but authorities are wary of political activism. Five activists were pardoned after being convicted of anti-state crimes in November.
