10 illegal migrants die off Egypt’s coast

Egyptian border guards recovered the bodies of 10 illegal migrants on Saturday. They were trying to cross the Mediterranean toward Italy, according to ambulance authorities.

The migrants, who included Syrians and multi-national Africans, drowned near Awlad Salah, a village in the Mediterranean province of Kafr al-Sheikh, said Ahmed al-Ganzoury, head of the province’s ambulance service. He told Al-Masry Al-Youm that rescue teams are continuing to search the area for more victims, adding that 15 people were found alive.

Illegal migration from Egyptian coasts to Europe have been on the rise over the past few years, turning deadly on many occasions, due to the poor conditions the migrants face on the trip.

The International Organization for Migration has announced that in 2015, more than 2,900 illegal migrants have died in the Mediterranean on their way to Europe.
