10,000 tons of wheat arrive in Alexandria from Ukraine

Around 10,000 tons of wheat arrived in Alexandria Tuesday from Ukraine aboard a Tanzanian ship.

Major General Al-Sayed Hamed Hedaya, head of the maritime transportation sector, said officials at the harbor undertook all necessary procedures to unload the ship and took samples of the wheat to ensure its safety for human consumption.

Last year, Ukraine — a traditional supplier of wheat to the Middle East and North Africa — was excluded from tender requests due to quality problems.

Since the start of the 2011/12 fiscal year on 1 July, the Egyptian government’s main wheat-purchasing body, the General Authority for Supply Commodities, has purchased 2.34 million tons of Russian wheat, 180,000 tons of Romanian wheat and 120,000 tons of Kazakh wheat, according to data collected by Reuters.
