3.9 earthquake hits Hurghada, no victims

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Hurghada at 4:31 am, seismic stations at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics’ network for earthquakes reported Monday.

Only Hurghada residents felt the quake, the institute said.

Hatem Ouda, head of the institute, said the quake’s location was 84 kilometers northwest of Hurghada. Its epicenter was located at latitude 27.59 degrees north, longitude 33 degrees east at a depth of 18.68 kilometers.

The Aqaba gulf is considered a seismically active area, Ouda said. He said the earthquake’s magnitude was below the average. No casualties were reported.
