April 6 plans anti-Shafiq campaign for Friday protest

The April 6 Youth Movement-Democratic Front plans to launch a signature-gathering campaign during a protest Friday as part of ongoing demonstrations against presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq.

The movement said that during the "Friday of Signatures," it will petition demonstrators to support the implementation of the Political Isolation Law, which would strip all remnants of the Mubarak regime of their political rights, including Shafiq.

“We will not stand idly by until [Shafiq] becomes president after all of the bloodshed and the sacrifices made by the people. Therefore, we announce the [protest] against the former [Mubarak] regime remnants,” the movement said in a statement Thursday. The group is expected to begin its demonstration with a march from Fatah Mosque to Tahrir Square, and then to the High Court.

Shafiq, who served as civil aviation minister and briefly as prime minister under former President Hosni Mubarak, faces Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsy in the mid-June runoff.

April 6 also called for protests Thursday in front of the Presidential Elections Commission against what it called "the strong return of the former regime."
