Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam conducted a field tour in Suez governorate on Thursday 11/6/2026 to inspect the water system and assess its performance during the peak irrigation demand period.
The minister began his visit in Suez, where he reviewed pumping stations in the governorate, accompanied by Suez Governor Abdel Meguid Saqr.
Hani Sewilam inspected dredging and maintenance works on the Suez Canal irrigation branch from kilometer 50 to its end, as well as the Shallufa canal and Shallufa Pump Station 1.
Sewilam directed continued coordination to establish a joint operational mechanism between Shallufa Pump Stations 1 and 2, noting that works and equipment upgrades worth around EGP 100 million have been implemented to ensure the stations’ readiness.
Sewilam also instructed the removal of illegal water intakes and reinforced coordination with the governorate to confiscate unauthorized pumping equipment on the Shallufa canal.
The minister Hani Sewilam reviewed technical measures to address areas suffering from accumulated agricultural drainage water, and listened to engineering teams’ explanations as well as proposals based on studies by the National Water Research Center (NWRC), in addition to feedback from farmers and residents.
Hani Sewilam called for the completion of technical studies aimed at achieving a sustainable solution to drainage accumulation, including the possibility of establishing a covered drainage network in the Shallufa area serving around 6,500 feddans, in coordination between ministry and governorate authorities.
Sewilam also stressed the need for the continuous removal of dredging and excavation residues from canal embankments to avoid obstructing traffic or public movement, in coordination with local authorities.
Hani Sewilam further stressed the removal of all illegal backfilling and encroachments obstructing pump intakes along the Shallufa canal to restore its designed hydraulic capacity.
