Armed forces urge youth to think of Egypt’s future

Egypt's armed forces today urged protesting youth to return to their homes in order to restore stability and security in the streets, saying that they did not request this from a position of power, but rather out of love for Egypt. They also asked people to think of the future and of Egypt.

In a television statement issued Wednesday, the army also called on youth to avoid following rumors and those who perpetuate destructive ideas, emphasizing the importance of listening to the voice of reason.

“We have to think of our country Egypt, both the army and the nation turned a loss into a victory in October 1973. The army and the nation are able to improve the situation with determination and gallantry. Your message has been received and your demands understood. We are working hard to secure our homeland, all for you, the people of Egypt.”

The statement further called on people to return to their work, schools and universities to avoid giving anyone the chance to gloat.

The armed forces had, following looting carried out by men in military uniform, warned that those wearing military uniform who do not belong to the military will be arrested and referred for military trial. It further urged citizens to report if they see any such thieves.

Egypt's armed forces thanked all citizens who helped in securing public and private properties and sent short messages on mobile phones urging youth not to listen to rumors and promising not to use force against the people.

The statement was received with skepticism from protesters on the ground, who have been urging the army to clear its stance and not to side with President Hosni Mubarak's regime.
