Arab League delegation in Darfur

The Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa is leading a senior Arab League delegation that includes permanent representatives in a two-day visit to the Darfur region of Sudan. The delegations will attend the opening of several projects funded by the Arab League.

The Arab League Council is also expected to hold a meeting in al-Fashir, the capital city of North Darfur, to express solidarity with the people.

The visit will begin Saturday morning, said Sudanese Ambassador to Egypt, Abdel Rahman Serr el-Khetm and will take the delegation directly to western and southern Darfur where a number of projects will be inaugurated.

The following day, the delegation will travel to northern Darfur to open other projects funded by the Arab League.

The delegation will hold a historical meeting in al-Fashir in support of Sudanese efforts to restore calm to the Darfur region, said el-Khetm. The delegation will then move back to Khartoum where it is scheduled to meet with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Attendees of the Arab League summit in Doha, Qatar pledged a monthly US$8 million to Sudan for a one-year period, said el-Khetm.

The Arab League is implementing projects in cooperation with the Sudanese government to provide basic services to internally displaced people, he added.

The Sudanese ambassador said the delegation will use helicopters supplied by the United Nations Mission in Darfur for the movements, as the security conditions in the region are unstable.
