Arab states ready to cover any cuts in aid to Egypt: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia said on Monday that Arab and Islamic countries will step in to help Egypt if Western nations cut aid packages to Cairo over a crackdown on Islamist protesters.

"To those who have announced they are cutting their aid to Egypt, or threatening to do that, [we say that] Arab and Muslim nations are rich…and will not hesitate to help Egypt," Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

Gulf States pledged billions of dollars in aid and financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of the overthrow of Mohamed Morsy.

On Saturday the Tamarod campaign called for a cancellation of Western aid to Egypt.

On its website, Tamarod said that the meddling of the U.S. in Egyptian internal affairs and its support of "terrorist groups" prompted the call to reject U.S. aid and call off the peace treaty with Israel.
