Army, police disperse and arrest protesting Suez workers

Army and police forces attempted on Monday to disperse a sit-in held by workers of the Suez Steel Company, who demand the disbursement of delayed payments and the reinstatement of fired colleagues.

The workers have been protesting for 22 days before police and army forces stationed at the Industrial Zone in Suez attempted to end their protests and detained two workers for interrogation over complaints filed against them by the company’s Lebanese owner, Rafiq Daw.

Workers rallied outside the company’s main gate, refusing to disperse before their demands are met.

Saud Omar, one of the workers, said Manpower Minister Kamal Abu Eita has been notified of the developments and has been asked to intervene.
