Biggest pro-state parliament coalition to be announced next week

Next week will see the formation of the biggest bloc allied with the government in Egypt’s new House of Representatives.

Mostafa Bakry, a journalist and MP from the For the Love of Egypt list, said the Coalition to Support the Egyptian State will next week declare the names of 400 parliamentarians who have joined the coalition.

For the Love of Egypt, an alliance of pro-government political parties and public figures, won all 120 seats allocated in the parliament for list-based competitors.

“The coalition will join For the Love of Egypt with the majority of political parties with seats in parliament…and more than 100 independents,” Bakry told Al-Masry Al-Youm. That, according to Bakry, guarantees the proposed coalition a parliament majority.

Shehab Wageeh, a spokesperson of the Free Egyptians Party, a liberal party with 65 seats, said no contacts were made with the planned coalition. “The Free Egyptians are seeking to maintain an independent bloc inside parliament,” said Wageeh, adding that “the party is not familiar with the platform of the new coalition."
