Brotherhood orders members to join affiliated party

The Muslim Brotherhood Guidance Bureau has instructed all group members to join the Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the group, threatening to dismiss those who would not carry out the instruction.

The party’s executive committee has reduced membership fees from LE100 to LE20 a year. “We thereby aim to generate income by attracting more members,” said party co-founder Salah Galal.

“Many of us do not want to join the party,” said a young group member speaking on condition of anonymity.

“I won’t join because I support dissident member Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh in the presidential elections,” said young group member Bassam Qutb.

For his part, executive committee member Azab Mostafa said group members should join the party. “It was the group which established that party in the first place,” he noted.
