Cairo airport still on alert after election results announced

Cairo International Airport is still on high alert Monday after extra security precautions had been put in place in anticipation of the announcement of the presidential election results.

Mohamed Morsy was announced as Egypt’s new president on Sunday afternoon.

Travel in and out of the airport has been calm throughout Monday, but there are still increased security measures in place to ward against any possible reactions to the announcement.

Travel volume remains at normal levels but is still lower than in 2010, official airport sources told the German news service Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Sources added that no flights have been cancelled today.

As the Egyptian cabinet prepares to submit its resignation, sources said that there has not been any record of flights taken by Egyptian officials or dignitaries this Monday, but some personalities from Arab and Islamic countries have made transit flights through Cairo.
