Cairo and Alexandria airports reopen as fog clears

Thick fog caused the closure of the Cairo and Alexandria airports for several hours early this morning. More than 30 flights were delayed or asked to divert to other internal and regional airports.

Egyptian navigation sources said this time of the year is characterized by thick fog and mist.

Fog reduced visibility to less than 50 meters this morning in Alexandria, so three flights–coming from Riyadh, Kuwait and al-Sharjah–were diverted to Cairo International Airport. The passengers on board the flights were then transported to Alexandria by bus.

Cairo Airport was closed two hours later and several other flights–mostly via Egypt Air–were diverted to the local airports of Sharm al-sheikh, Luxor, and Aswan.

Three hours later, the fog lifted and flights are once more departing the airport.
