Security authorities in Egypt have arrested a young man accused of sexually harassed a woman while she was walking in a Cairo neighborhood with her 10-year-old child.
The man was arrested after a video of the incident went viral on Facebook.
According to investigations, the accused uttered obscene words to the woman, who screamed for help to passersby.
Four people, including a man over 60, rushed to the woman to help her and held the man until police arrived. Some also beat the man, the victim told the police.
The woman insisted that the accused be handed over to the police, saying: “I will not give up my right under the law and this criminal must be punished. Why do we have to hear insulting impolite words in the morning and in front of people in the street?”.
A video clip documenting the harassment shows the accused walking several meters behind the victim and saying things to her while trying to touch her.
Egypt recently approved amendments that increased the punishment for those who harass others in public or private by making sexual insinuations through gestures, words, or actions.
