Cairo U revisited by Niqab controversy

The crisis over the wearing of the niqab–or full Islamic face veil–by female teachers at Cairo University again came to the fore on Tuesday when psychology instructor Magda Hamed lodged a formal complaint against the university president and faculty dean for forbidding her from teaching while wearing the face veil.

Hamed is the only teacher at the university to wear the niqab.

"We won’t allow any instructor that wears the niqab to give classes," said Faculty Dean Zein Abu Khadra. "She will have to get a court order if she wants to wear it."

University administration allows female students to wear the niqab in class, but they must take it off during exams in order to verify their identities.
