Cairo University student team participates in US rocket competition

Cairo University President Gaber Nassar announced on Thursday that a team of students from the Faculty of Engineering participated for the first time in the 10th annual intercollegiate rocket engineering competition in the United States, where they launched a small rocket.
 
The competition took place in the state of Utah, United States where 50 universities from around the world participated. Though most teams were from the United States and Canada, teams representing universities in India, Australia, Brazil, and Turkey were also present, according to Nassar.
 
He pointed out that the Cairo University team was the sole representative of Africa and the Arab states. The Egyptian team won the Team Spirit Award.
 
Sherif Mourad, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University, said in a statement that the missile was designed by three students from the Department of Aerospace Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering: Essam Omar, Ahmed al-Gohary and Hamed Gamal. They worked under the scientific supervision of Professor Basman Hadidy.
 
Cairo University participated in the basic level competition, Mourad said, pointing out that the missile the Cairo University team builit had launched successfully. 
 
The teams from the American universities of Mississippi, Massachusetts, Oregon and Colorado ranked first in the advanced level, the basic level, the maximum payload and the development and technical excellence competitions.
 
Student teams from the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University have been involved, over the past two years, in several international competitions for cars, energy-saving vehicles, off-road exploration vehicles and software.
