CAPMAS: 17.3% increase in newspaper copies distributed in 2013

The number of newspaper copies distributed inside and outside Egypt reached 758.2 million in 2013, compared to 646.6 million in 2012, marking a 17.3 percent increase, according to Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS)
 
In a press release published on Sunday on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, CAPMAS said 80 newspapers, including seven partisan ones, were published in 2013, compared to 81 in 2012.
 
The total number of local periodicals, issued by governmental, private and business entities reached 168 in 2013, compared to 203 in 2012.
 
The annual World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. According to the UN, it is an opportunity to assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attacks on their independencepay and to tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
