Classes resume in universities despite protests

Classes resumed on Wednesday in Cairo University and other universities that were re-opened despite protests to dismiss certain faculty members.

In related news, Higher Education Minister Amr Ezzat Salama dismissed the dean of the 10th Ramadan Technological Institute, Mostafa Thabet, cousin of former President Hosni Mubarak’s wife Suzanne Mubarak, for abuse at work.

Meanwhile, Cairo University students staged protests on campus. They requested the dismissal of Sami Abdel Aziz, dean of the Faculty of Mass Communications.

The administration of Ain Shams University, for its part, said in a statement on Wednesday that it has responded to demands by students and faculty members. It has agreed to appoint assistant professors without prior permission from state security services and increase the budget for scientific research.
