Court orders Azmy detained another 30 days after authority appeals his release

Cairo Criminal Court overturned Thursday a Nasr City appellate court ruling releasing former Presidential Chief of Staff Zakariya Azmy from Tora prison.

The criminal court ordered that Azmy's detention be extended another 30 days pending investigations by the Illicit Gains Authority (IGA), which is affiliated with the Justice Ministry. Azmy is accused of financial corruption.

The appellate court ordered his release on LE200,000 bail earlier this week after his 15-day detention period had been extended the legal maximum of three times.

IGA Chief Assem al-Gohary appealed the court decree, saying that Azmy might contact witnesses in an attempt to alter their testimony if released.
