Doctors Syndicate demands quick release of 6 doctors detained in Saudi Arabia

The Doctors Syndicate decries the detention of Egyptian doctors in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdullah al-Karboni of the syndicate’s freedom committee said on Thursday.

He added that many doctors have been detained without trials, and that others have been charged without evidence or have received unfair trials.

The syndicate released a statement saying that the freedom committee has organized a sit-in outside the Saudi embassy calling for an immediate end to violations against Egyptian doctors.

Karboni said six doctors were detained in Saudi Arabia and another has been threatened with deportation.

Drs. Mohamed Ali Hamid and Hussein Abdul Ghani were sentenced to jail time after trial. Drs. Abdel Wehab Abouel Hassan and Islam Abdel Fatah have been detained without being informed of the charges against them or when their trials will be held. Drs. Abdel Hamid Mohamed Ahmed and Zeinab Mohammed Abdel Fattah have also been detained.

Last Thursday, Saudi Ambassador Ahmed Abdel Aziz al-Qattan said all Egyptians in Saudi prisons are detained for security and criminal charges.

His statement came after Sada al-Balad, an Egyptian news website, cited media reports saying there are 50 Egyptians imprisoned in Saudi Arabia on political charges.
