Doctors are trapped in a room adjacent to the operating theater in the old Qasr al-Aini Hospital as looters with guns and knives roam the hospital, a doctor told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The doctor, who did not want to be named, frantically said doctors were forced to abandon intensive care patients. As he hung up, he was struggling to keep the door closed against the intruders.
Earlier in the day, a young female resident told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the army needed to send soldiers to protect doctors as things inside the hospital got chaotic.
“Nobody is outside. Everyone has abandoned us and fled,” said Ahmed Hossam, another doctor at the hospital.
The hospital is only a mile from downtown Tahrir Square where army tanks waited, but as of 8 PM, no outside help had yet arrived.
Hossam alleged looters were affiliated with the government and said President Hosni Mubarak should not only be forced to leave office, but should also be prosecuted.
