Egypt ends curfew in Abbasseya

A decision to end the week-long curfew in Cairo's Abbasseya neighborhood and the area surrounding the Defense Ministry will take effect starting Friday night, a military official told state-run MENA news agency.

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces imposed a curfew from 12 midnight till 6am starting last Friday.

The curfew was a response to violent clashes between military police and protesters, some of whom tried to break through the barbed wire around the ministry.

The protesters were demanding that the military hand over power as scheduled, that Article 28 of the Constitutional Declaration be cancelled, and that those responsible for deaths in earlier Abbasseya clashes be punished.

Twelve people died and hundreds were injured during the ensuing clashes. Military police arrested hundreds in connection with the incident.
