Egypt FM to attend Paris march condemning Charlie Hebdo killings

Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry flew Sunday morning to Paris to attend a silent march called for by the French presidency to condemn the bloody armed attack that killed 12, mainly journalists, last Wednesday.

French President Francois Hollande had called for the march to denounce the attack on Charlie Hebdo, the weekly satirical magazine that sparked an uproar in the Islamic world by its depictions of the Prophet Mohamed and Islam in its cartoons. The journalists of the magazine had received multiple threats and their office had even been firebombed in 2011.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty said Shokry’s representation of Egypt in the planned march “reflects Egypt’s siding by France during those critical circumstance and its full denunciation of that terrorist incident that has nothing to do with Islam.”
