Egypt hosts African World Heritage Fund board meeting in Cairo

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates hosted the 38th meeting of the Board of Governors of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) in Cairo.

The ministry said the meeting was opened by Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Amr al-Sherbiny, with participation from UNESCO World Heritage Center Director Lazare Eloundou, the permanent representatives of South Africa and Namibia to UNESCO, and members of the fund’s board and executive secretariat.

Discussions reviewed the fund’s main achievements over the past six months, including its contribution to the nomination of four African heritage sites that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2025, and the removal of three African sites from the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The fund also reported training 160 individuals to strengthen the capacities of African national heritage institutions, providing financial grants to four countries for heritage protection, research and training, as well as organizing two heritage events in Zambia and Kenya attended by about 450 experts, resulting in two declarations on world heritage and sustainable development.

At the conclusion of the meetings, the foreign ministry, in coordination with the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Tourism Promotion Authority, organized visits for participants to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, which attendees praised as a continental model for preserving national heritage.
