Egypt most affected by climate change: Agriculture Ministry

Ayman Abu Hadid, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s Information Center for Climate Change and Renewable Energy, said that Egypt is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, particularly with regard to threats of rising sea levels in the Nile Delta.

He added that during waves of bad weather, rain fall in the northern and eastern provinces is heavier, along with thunderstorms and floods in Sinai, the Red Sea mountains and Upper Egypt.

“This wave in Alexandria came five days earlier than usual,” he said, adding that climate change will lead to worse weather in Egypt in the future. “Limited financial resources will be an obstacle in addressing this problem.”

He said the bad weather wave will continue until the first week of November and will damage crops due to heavy frost. “But rain helps the fertility of the soil,” he added.

Abu Hadid stressed the importance of compiling studies on the impact of climate change on the agriculture industry.

He called for a daily bulletin that explains the impact of weather on the productivity of crops, the best times for the cultivation of different crops in different regions and the spread of certain disease and insects.
