Egypt reaffirms support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Saturday, October 17, 2026, Egypt’s support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, national institutions and the principle of placing all weapons under state control.

Abdelatty made the remarks during a meeting Saturday with Ammar al-Hakim, head of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Council of Foreign Ministers in Baghdad.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nader Zaki said Abdelatty underscored the deep-rooted fraternal ties between Egypt and Iraq. He also welcomed al-Hakim’s recent visit to Cairo, during which he met with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and praised his role in promoting stability and political consensus in Iraq.

Abdelatty expressed hope that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi would visit Cairo on Nov. 23 to convene the fourth session of the Egyptian-Iraqi Joint Higher Committee.

The meeting would seek to strengthen economic and trade cooperation and expand the participation of Egyptian companies in Iraq’s development and reconstruction projects.

He also stressed the need to accelerate coordination among technical committees under the trilateral cooperation mechanism involving Egypt, Iraq and Jordan to advance priority joint projects.

The meeting addressed regional developments, with Abdelatty emphasizing the importance of shielding Iraq from the repercussions of escalating tensions in the region.

The two sides also exchanged views on developments in Syria and Yemen and on maritime security and freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz.

They stressed the need to de-escalate tensions, prioritize political and diplomatic solutions, and maintain Egyptian-Iraqi coordination to support regional security and stability.
