Egypt reports its first suspected case of E. coli infection

Doctors in Hurghada have reported what they believe could be Egypt's first case of E. coli infection since the recent outbreak of the illness in Europe.

A German tourist in the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam suffered severe stomach pains and was taken to the Hurghada General Hospital for treatment. His insurance company then arranged for him to be flown home to Germany.

The 32-year-old tourist arrived from Frankfurt four days ago to spend two weeks in Egypt.

Health Ministry consultant Adel al-Adawy said that the result of tests carried out on the patient to identify the illness would be released in 48 hours. He said also that the patient's high temperature had now gone down.

Meanwhile, all Red Sea hospitals have declared a state of alert as a precautionary measure.
