Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad stressed the need to accelerate efforts to maximize Egypt’s benefit from concessional financing and grants provided by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), as part of the ministry’s role as the fund’s national coordinator in Egypt.
During a follow-up meeting on the outcomes of the GCF committee’s second session, Awad emphasized the need to strengthen coordination among national stakeholders, expand the pipeline of bankable climate projects, and enhance cooperation with international financing institutions and development partners to support Egypt’s climate adaptation and mitigation goals.
The committee reviewed recent developments related to the GCF in Egypt, including the outcomes of a recent fund mission to Cairo, ongoing efforts to accredit additional Egyptian institutions, targeted support for green SMEs, and stronger partnerships with the banking sector.
Discussions also covered climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable energy projects, as well as mechanisms to mobilize climate finance and encourage private-sector investment through innovative financing tools.
Participants stressed the importance of aligning all proposed funding programs with Egypt’s national priorities and sustainable development plans to ensure the country derives maximum benefit from available climate finance opportunities.
