Egypt signs its first 5G operating deal – here’s what you need to know

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced the issuance of a license to operate 5G mobile services between the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the Egyptian Telecommunications Company (ETC).

The value of the license is set at US$150 million for a period of 15 years, without any additional renewals or privileges.

The ETC’s signing of the 5G license is part of the state’s efforts to provide modern technologies to businesses and individuals through companies operating in Egypt.

 

What is 5G?

The fifth generation of cellular wireless technology, 5G, “offers faster upload and download speeds, more consistent connectivity, and greater capacity compared to previous networks,” Amazon explains.

“It is much faster and more reliable than current 4G networks, and has the potential to change the way we use the internet to access applications, social networks, and information.”

“5G can help support and expand a wide range of applications, such as cloud-connected traffic control, drone delivery, video calls, and console-quality gaming on the go. From global payments and emergency response to remote learning and mobile workforces, the benefits and applications of 5G are limitless,” it added.

 

Differences between 4G and 5G mobile services

  • Higher speeds

5G networks are up to 10 times faster than 4G, clocking speeds of 10 gigabits per second.

  • Low latency

According to Amazon, “The main reason for this leap in speed is the reduction in latency. Latency is the delay between the sending of information and its reception. 4G networks can achieve a latency of around 200 milliseconds, which drops to a fraction of a second with 5G.”

  • Higher bandwidth

“5G networks can operate on a wider range of bandwidth (low-band, mid-band, and high-band) by increasing radio frequency resources, from the 3.5 GHz sub-6 GHz used in 4G to 100 GHz and beyond,” the Amazon page reads.

“5G networks can also operate in both low-band and mmWave frequencies, which leads to a significant increase in capacity. With multi-gigabit per second data rates, and low latency, this bandwidth suggests the ability to connect more devices to send and receive data simultaneously.”

“5G has the potential to revolutionize the way we use the internet. It could be used to support new applications such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and self-driving cars,” it concluded.
