Egypt: We’ve evacuated more than 1,300 citizens from Syria

More than 1,300 Egyptians have been evacuated from Syria since 19 July, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Amr Roshdy on Thursday.

"The acting ambassador in Syria, Alaa Abdel Azizi, has negotiated the evacuation of 915 Egyptian citizens through the Damascus International Airport, and 443 others through Aleppo Airport. The state paid for the evacuation of 273 Egyptians," Roshdy stated.

Efforts by the Egyptian embassy also resulted in the release of 168 Egyptians detained by Syrian authorities, who have now been brought home, said Roshdy.

Bashar al-Assad's regime has been perpetrating a bloody crackdown against popular protests in Syria that began in March 2011. The regime's retaliation has to date left more than 20,000 Syrians dead.

Egypt withdrew its ambassador in Damascus in protest against the brutalities of the Syrian regime after pressure from the now dissolved People's Assembly. Syria withdrew its ambassador to Egypt in return.
