Egypt’s top court rules law on nationality unconstitutional

Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) on Sunday has ruled that the second paragraph of article 6 for the law on Egyptian nationality is unconstitutional.

The court said that the disputed paragraph limited acquiring Egyptian nationality to minor children of a foreign father who obtained the citizenship, while excluding minor children from a foreign mother who obtained the citizenship.

The court explained that the legislator had organized that minor children of a foreigner father, who acquired Egyptian citizenship, be naturalized citizens as their right depends upon their father citizenship, which is not the case for the minor children of a foreign mother.
