ElBaradei 1st in military council’s Facebook presidential poll

Mohamed ElBaradei has received the largest number of votes in a poll posted on the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces’ official Facebook page, which asks users about their preferred presidential candidate.

As of this morning, the former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency is in first place with more than 19,000 supporters, or 36 percent of those participating.

Independent Islamic candidate Mohamed Selim al-Awa, who announced his candidacy only on Sunday, managed to gain more than 10,000 supporters, equivalent to 19 percent.

Former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq featured third with 12 percent, though he has not officially announced his candidacy.

Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, a Salafi preacher, came fourth with 8 percent, surprisingly ahead of outgoing Arab League chief Amr Moussa, who has only 7 percent despite his intense campaigning.

The list of potential candidates also included former vice president Omar Suleiman, who got only 5 percent. The rest of the votes were divided among the remaining candidates.

A total of 56,109 Facebook users have so far voted in the poll.
