ElBaradei calls for boycott of next year’s presidential elections

Reform campaigner Mohamed ElBaradei on Sunday called for a popular boycott of Egypt's upcoming presidential elections slated for September.

On his Twitter account, ElBaradei blasted the strict regulations governing presidential candidacies.

"According to these rules, only five people–out of some 85 million Egyptians–can qualify to stand in elections,” he said.

It would be better if the president appointed his own successor, ElBaradei added, than to subject the Egyptian people to the “farce" of elections.
