Emirates Lawyers Association to sue Essam al-Erian

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Lawyers Association on Monday said it is filing a lawsuit with the Emirati attorney general against Essam al-Erian, the leading figure of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, charging him with insulting the UAE and its people.

Erian’s remarks contradict the values and norms of the fraternal ties between the two peoples, the association said in a statement.

“The Egyptian government did not denounce Erian’s remarks,” said association chairman Zayed Al Shamsi. “Nor did it take any decisive action against him.”

Erian had last month criticized the UAE during a Shura Council session for bringing Egyptians to trial on charges of forming a Muslim Brotherhood cell in the UAE.

The association announced it would file the lawsuit Tuesday.
