Experts differ over ElBaradei presedential bid

Experts have disagreed over Mohamed ElBaradei’s chances in next year’s presidential election should he decide to run. The former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency has yet to confirm his candidacy.

Wahid Abdel Meguid, director of Al-Ahram Center for Publishing and Translation, said: "Elbaradei should either join a political party–since he cannot run as an independent candidate–or remain a civil advocate of change without running for presidency." He added: "ElBaradei could also choose to live abroad and write his memoirs as he had once planned."

Amr Rabie, expert at Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, expressed a different opinion: "What’s important is that ElBaradei has embarrassed the regime domestically and internationally for not allowing independents to run in elections."

Shura Council member Mustafa Elwi, for his part, said: "ElBaradei must accept things as they are and stop calling for constitutional amendments, as this issue should be articulated by all the different political forces, not just a single man."
