Famous Islamic scholar attacks liberals on Facebook page

Famous Islamic scholar Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi launched a scathing attack on liberal groups in Egypt on his official Facebook page, describing liberals as “intruders” to Egypt who have no political future.

Qaradawi, the chairman of the International Federation of Muslim Scholars, said, “Egyptian liberals are intruders as they reject the legitimacy of Islam.”

He said he did not believe liberals had a future in politics unless Islamists ended up disappointing the Egyptian people.

On his official Facebook page, Qaradawi said, “Liberals have a stronger media presence than Islamists as they include multiple parties and political forces and they have many media tools, newspapers and channels.”

“I wasn’t the least bit surprised by the Muslim Brotherhood’s victory in the parliamentary elections, but I was somewhat surprised by the Salafis as they never showed any interest in politics,” Qaradawi added.

He continued by saying that Salafis had said democracy was prohibited, and he responded to them in speeches and articles arguing that Islam and democracy were compatible.

He added that he had spoken against those who defended ousted President Hosni Mubarak, such as Egypt’s grand mufti and some senior Al-Azhar sheikhs who believed Egyptians should accept their reality rather than pushing for democracy.
