Fathi Sorour rearrested in relation to assault on Tahrir Square

The Egyptian Court of Appeal on Sunday extended the detention of former Speaker of Parliament Fathi Sorour for an additional 30 days pending investigation into the attack on peaceful protesters in Tahrir Square on 2 February, dubbed by the media the "Battle of the Camel”.

Dozens of Sorour supporters demanded his release and called on the prosecutor not to respond to what they described as “pressure from the revolutionaries”.

The protestors raised banners praising Sorour and described him as “a man of services and achievements”. They also chanted slogans such as "We love you, Sorour" and "No to pressure on the judicial system”.

On 29 May, the court ruled that Sorour should be held for 15 days pending investigation in relation to the same case.

Sorour was released last month following investigations into another case related to the illegal accumulation of wealth after he submitted documents saying he accumulated his wealth through legal means.
