Five laborers detained for stopping oil tanker

A military court in Suez ruled Friday that it will detain five laborers for a period of 15 days while it investigates them for the charges of intercepting naval forces and blocking a sea route.

The military forces detained the five laborers Wednesday after they intercepted an oil tanker entering the port, blocking its path with smaller boats. They were among a group of workers striking at Someed Seaport to demand permanent contracts, better pay and working conditions.

A number of laborers called on the authorities to release their colleagues, saying they did not aim to intercept the ship or the naval forces and that they only wanted to express their opinion and protest against working conditions.
